Albemarle County schools to see fewer teachers, larger classes next year

One week after the conclusion of Albemarle County Schools’ Teacher Appreciation Week—and months after droves of students, parents and teachers turned out for a marathon meeting about the county budget and tax rate—the county school board approved a $142.9 million spending plan last night. The 2010-2011 budget is a few million less than the current budget; school staff will be reduced by roughly 22 teachers and an additional 20 or so employees, according to the Daily Progress.

"Our teachers know that they are not just employees, they are teachers, the most significant profession in this nation," wrote school superintendent Pam Moran last week. "I am proud to call Albemarle’s teachers my colleagues. Our community is honored by their work with our learners."
