Two years ago, the Airport unveiled a new 20-year plan that included adding about 1,000 feet to its runway. The extended landing strip will accommodate more jets, which are arriving and departing the airport in growing numbers. A group called Delta Airport Consultants is overseeing the construction.
Besides the extended runway, recent construction has also widened Airport Road west from Route 29N. The final phase of construction, which involves relocating about 825 feet of Earlysville Road and adding a roundabout at the intersection with Route 606, is underway. South of the roundabout, workers will also improve Route 643, ultimately creating a “T” intersection with Earlysville Road. Airport officials say the construction should be finished by late summer or early fall.—John Borgmeyer
