There aren’t many exercise classes where one of the first things you do is create an alter ego and learn a move called “Mud Flap Girl.” In fact, E-fit might be the only one.
With the E standing for “exotic,” E-Fit Dance is better known as pole dancing, and you can learn all about it at Shergold Studio (975-4611). (The program also includes exotic and belly dancing classes.) The courses are taught by a group of highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors turning poles into an innovative form of exercise. The hour-long classes range from a five-week introductory course ($70) to 10 weeks of advanced pole ($140). The longer classes include the option of making a video at the end, complete with smoke machine, lights and outfits.

All euphemisms aside, these classes are serious on skills, requiring concentration, coordination and some major arm strength. As well as building up your muscles, E-Fit Dance will build up your confidence in a way that sweating on the cross trainer certainly doesn’t. If you can do “sexy face” while gyrating your hips and running your hands through your hair in front of the rest of class, I’m pretty sure you can do anything.
