UVA announces first “Talk About Books” event

Two prominent local authors will speak at the first “Talk About Books” event, sponsored by UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences and the Carter G. Woodson Institute of African-American and African Studies.

Lucia “Cinder” Stanton, senior research historian at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, will speak about her recent book “Those Who Labor for My Happiness: Slavery at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.” According to the press release, the book is a “detailed reconstruction reveals the active roles played by enslaved African-Americans in the creation of a dynamic community at Monticello.”

Valerie Cooper, UVA assistant professor of religious studies, will be present to discuss her book, “Word, Like Fire: Maria Stewart, the Bible and the Rights of African Americans.” Stewart was a free black woman believed my many to have been the first woman of any race to give public political speeches.

The event will be held on February 24 at 3:30 p.m. in Rouss Hall, room 403.
