UPDATE: David Lee Cowan, 30, killed in first Charlottesville homicide this year

Update: The Charlottesville Police Department has identified the victim of this morning’s shooting as 30-year-old David Lee Cowan. Police say that Cowan’s body has been transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Richmond, where an autopsy will be performed.

According to Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts, the Charlottesville Police Department is currently working with the family of a 30-year-old man who died early this morning as a result of an apparent homicide near the Westhaven neighborhood. At 2:45am, law enforcement responded to gun shots near Run Street, which intersects 10th Street NW near Westhaven, the city’s largest and oldest public housing development. The victim died at the scene of the shooting. The incident marks the first homicide of the year.

Roberts says that investigators do not currently have information concerning the weapon used, and have not currently received any information via the Crimestoppers line (977-4000). Stay tuned for more information.
