Bits and pieces get renamed

On October 5 UVA’s Board of Visitors passed a resolution to rename a new road and an architectural detail in honor of University Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Leonard Sandridge. What was formerly the North Grounds Connector Road between the 250 Bypass and Massie Road will be called Sandridge Road and the entrance to the John Paul Jones Arena will become the Leonard W. Sandridge Portal.
This is a naming convention we can really get behind! Think about it: There are so many people whose hard work and dedication deserves recognition—and there are so many bits and pieces that are still unnamed at UVA! Two problems solved at once.
In that spirit, we offer a few suggestions. How about the Carol Wood Voicemail Retrieval System in honor of the hard-working University spokeswoman who fields too many darn calls all day? Or, the Al Groh lavatory, where fans can wash their hands clean of the whole football mess? Would UVA consider naming a squeaky wheel in honor of ever-quotable history professor Jeffrey Rossman? Is there an unnamed pillar that could be graced with the name of English professor Rita Dove?
Finally, we’d make a suggestion about University Architect David Neuman, but his name is already on each new red brick that gets laid on Grounds!—Cathy Harding
