Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Director David Paylor says that DEQ officials will not facilitate a city-county public meeting about the community water plan. [Charlottesville Tomorrow posts a copy of the letter here.] Last month, Albemarle Supervisors chair Ann Mallek said county supervisors would not take part in a DEQ-facilitated conversation because such a dialogue would give a false impression of compromise in a debate that lacked room for it.
According to Paylor’s letter, DEQ will remain uninvolved unless four bodies—county supervisors, Charlottesville City Council, the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority, and the Albemarle County Service Authority—all agree on the need for such a meeting and request it again.
"I also expressed hope that you are working locally to resolve differences concerning the water supply permit," writes Paylor. In fact, city and county officials are meeting now at the Albemarle County office building to discuss the contested water plan. Read more here, and stay tuned for updates.
