Charlottesville School Board announces budget work session

Charlottesville City Schools Superintendent Rosa Atkins announced in a three-page letter that a February 15 meeting for community members to discuss the proposed 2010-2011 city schools budget will be postponed for one week. The community comment will be replaced by a budget work session for the school board, while the comment meeting will take place on Monday, February 22. For more information on meetings, read the letter here.

On February 4, Superintendent Atkins revealed a proposed budget of $69.4 million, a decrease of more than $1 million from the previous year’s budget. As she notes in her letter: "Governor McDonnell’s recent decision to ‘un-freeze’ the Local Composite Index—used to distribute state funds to school divisions—means that our division will lose nearly $1 million in addition to earlier cuts. Hence, we must revisit the budget to account for the lost revenue."
