The day after long-time Board of Supervisors member Sally Thomas announced her retirement after 16 years, John Lowry officially kicked off his run for her seat as an Independent. Lowry will face another candidate for the Samuel Miller District seat, Democrat Madison Cummings.
Lowry, chairman of the Albemarle County Economic Development Authority, is running on a three-point platform: maintaining the county’s recognized quality of life, as well as improving education and transportation.
“We need to have good government in Albemarle County. We need better government in Albemarle County,” he said this morning. “It’s not an easy job. I have spent three years in earnest thinking about it, preparing for the job. I have learned much about the job, and there is still much to learn.”

Concerning the quality of life, Lowry defined it as the existing green spaces, our open areas, good planning, and by not having urban sprawl. Second on his agenda is education.
“Education is by far the single largest line item in the operating budget each year,” he said, stressing the importance of educating the future generations.
On transportation, Lowry said the county needs to have better roads, comprising of extensions to existing roads and connectors.
“In Virginia, we’ve got a state that’s gone on holiday,” said Lowry. “Either the state needs to reassume its fiscal responsibility, or they need to give to the county the ability to raise money, set aside money and fund our projects.”
Thanking Thomas for her service, Lowry said he can offer leadership and a proven and successful track record. “I am the best candidate for the job,” he said.
