Remember The Fugitive? There’s a moment in the script when Dr. Richard Kimble, sought by law enforcement, absconds in an ambulance. When the missing vehicle is noticed, one U.S. Marshal asks, "Where the hell is he going in that ambulance?"
This morning, UVA Police and hospital staff asked themselves the same question when 26-year-old Jay Tilden Gatliff, a resident of Woodstock with a pair of reckless driving convictions to his name, climbed behind the wheel of an ambulance parked at the UVA Health System’s Emergency Department and took off.
According to a media release from UVA Police Lieutenant Melissa Fielding, Gatliff "got into an unsecured ambulance at the University of Virginia Emergency Department and drove away." State police caught up with the ambulance roughly 25 miles west, near the Waynesboro exit on Interstate 64.
Of course, in the case of Dr. Kimble, Tommy Lee Jones’ smirking response was, "Anywhere he wants." In the case of Gatliff, charged with grand larceny, the answer is the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he is currently being held.
