On Friday, April 30, the UVA Board of Visitors (BOV) will meet to discuss its finances. Among the proposed changes: a 4.9-percent increase in housing costs for many student residences, a 9.9-percent increase in in-state tuition costs (or an increase of 7.3 percent for out-of-state students) and an average meal plan rate increase of 3.5 percent. For the current fiscal year, the average rate of a double room in student residences was $4,510. Should the BOV approve a rate increase, the new cost of a double room will total $4,732, or an increase of $222, per student. According to the BOV’s report, the increase will offset and cover rising operating costs, and will help fund the renovations currently under way on Alderman Road.
The BOV will also vote on a proposed increase of both in-state and out-of-state tuition costs as a result of budget reductions, among other things. If approved, out-of-state undergraduate students would pay $33,574 in tuition and fees—an increase of 6 percent, or $1,902, per academic year. For Virginians, the proposed increase is $956, or 9.9 percent, for a grand total of $10,628.
Members of the BOV’s finance and executive committees will meet on Friday, April 30, at 2pm in the Rotunda.
